The Red Box Project

The Red Box Project, an initiative that quietly ensures that no young person misses out on their education because of their period.

We are 100% community driven and run by women around the UK.

We place constantly stocked Red Boxes of menstrual supplies in schools and youth clubs for young people to access, aiming to reach those who may not be able to afford these vital items.

Locally we contact community centres, local supermarkets and businesses willing to take a red box as a collection point, where donations can be made.

When the boxes are full, we collect the items and replenish the boxes in local schools when they contact us letting us know their boxes are running low.

Superarts Academy

Superarts Academy formerly known as The Irene Hayes School of Dance, or ‘Renie’s’ was founded by Irene Hayes BEM in 1962.

Irene is still very actively involved in the running of the academy and works alongside her daughter Susan, the Managing Director of Superarts, plus Karen Willis and James Owen.

All of which are former students.

Superarts Academy is dedicated to the creative potential of every child regardless of race, culture, socio-economic or religious background.

By working with children through dance and performance, we offer training in the performing arts; from ballet to street, jazz to tap, acro/gym to musical theatre plus much more.

The classes are fun, disciplined, challenging, interactive and most of all creative, supportive, and nourishing.Superarts also provides students with performance opportunities and examinations.

Many of our students go onto become professionals in the entertainment industry whilst others may go onto teach.

Many simply have wonderful and fond memories from their childhood of being part of the Superarts ‘family’. In a safe environment, the young people attending Superarts are given a multitude of tools to promote both their physical and emotional well-being.

Dance is one of the most natural and life-enhancing activities any of us can do!

You can find out more about Superarts by visiting our website: https://www.superarts.co.uk

Our steelband performances give you a touch of the Caribbean performing the best in Calypso, Reggae and Popular Music.

All our musicians have been performing at major events for over 10-years.

“The steelpan is a perfect instrument, as the basic skills are easy to learn and playing the instrument does not require any previous musical experience. It is possible for a group with any level of musical experience to accomplish a simple melody within a short period of time”.

Steelpan is the only new instrument to be invented in the last century which originates from the twin islands of Trinidad & Tobago.

It is also a proven fact that steelpan music enhances the senses of various disabilities and can be therapeutic for various illnesses including mental health.

Nature Walk

Of interest to gardeners and maybe historians too, will be the planned nature walk, which will start in the walled garden at the back of the Brandon library, then visit the wildflower meadow by the Henry Moore, progress to the flower garden in Kennington Park, and finish up at Bee Urban.

It should take about 45 mins, and there will be 3 actors, in costume popping up along the walk, delivering some historical monologues on Edward Hollamby (Brandon Architect), Henry Moore (Public Art) and finally on the Chartists (Democracy & all that)

The nature walk will take place at 14.00 & 16.00.

Bee Urban

bee-orban-

BeeUrban is a honeybee-centric social enterprise based in Kennington, South London, which aims to positively influence the urban environment through supporting local people and promoting positive, ecologically sound practice around urban greening, building, farming and particularly bee-keeping.

It’s not just about bees, people are equally important to Bee Urban.

We are here to work with everyone, whatever your age, level of experience or need.

We are particularly skilled in working with vulnerable adults, including those with mental health needs and learning difficulties.

Our main site is the Bee Barn at the old Keeper’s Lodge in Kennington Park and we do a significant amount of work from Camberwell Subterranea on the Brandon Estate.

Both are sites that were derelict and abused before Bee Urban turned them into thriving community spaces, working with local volunteers to clear waste and old structures and replace them with environmentally friendly, horticulturally rich buildings and growing spaces – the process being as important as the finished product.

The nature walk at the Brandon Summer Fete will end up at Bee Urban in Kennington Park if you fancy a quick visit to our main home, where you can buy our honey.

We’d love to see you there!

bee-orban-observation-hiive

The Colony of bees live in the hive using 4 frames (14×12) to constructed they habitat.

It now stands in the Bee Barn with a colony of Bees inside. Constructed and Design by Barnaby Shaw and Jack Tatham.

This is a unique way of observing the nature and behaviour of the honeybees living inside the hive.

This hive also gives us the ability to observe the bees all year without disrupt them.

We are hoping to bring the hive to the Brandon Summer Fete.

Come along and see if you can find the Queen Bee!
